Roof Leakage Repair hacks: Fix a roofing Leak

When you notice water damage signs on your roof, it is important to find the cause as soon as possible. The obvious leak can be caused by holes in the shingles due to corrosion or if an object has been removed and not patched correctly, such as a satellite dish or antenna. Another common reason for leaks on roofs could stem from missing roof tiles. Unwanted water leaks could also be due to debris blocking gutters which result in too much pressure on them than what they were built to handle, leading them to break down quicker than expected leaving little bits everywhere around the house.

Roof leak warning signs

Roof leaks happen when the sealant that is used to cover the gap between your roof and ceiling or walls starts to break down. Roof leak repairs are usually done by experienced professionals who have the necessary equipment, but before you call for a professional, there are some things you should look for in order to determine if it’s time for a repair.

Roof leaks can be tricky to spot at first, as they often start out as a small drip that becomes larger over time. They usually have the following common signs:

  • Water stains on your ceiling or walls
  • Leaking water
  • Mold growing on the walls, especially behind furniture pressed against the wall such as mirrors or picture frames
  • A musty smell in your house which is caused by mold growing behind affected areas of drywall and sheetrock
  • Damaged drywall
  • Damaged furniture

DIY – Finding your roof leak

There are a variety of ways you can tell if your home has water leaks. One way is by following what experts say, which boils down to “thinking like water” because it typically enters homes through worn shingles or loose nails at intersections on roof planes. Water typically enters homes through worn shingles; loose nails at intersections of roof planes (typically caused by poor weather) or corrosion-damaged flashing around vents. You should also check for poorly sealed corners between two sections of the roof that meet without overlapping siding boards below them.

Another simple way to check for leaks in your ceiling is you can try turning off all of your lights and shine a flashlight up towards the ceiling. If you can see light coming through any cracks or gaps in your roofing material, this could be an indication that it’s time to call for a roof leak repair service. Roof leaks can be a nuisance and cause significant damage to your home, which is why it’s important to take roof leak repair seriously.

Simple solutions for small leaks

Shiners

A simple roof leak that you can fix would be having a ‘shiner’ in the underside of your roof. This is when a nail is missing from the framing member and moisture escapes from the rooms below and condenses onto a cold nail. The nail would be frosted in the cold and then as it gets warmer the water will start to drip. Simply clip the nail with side-cutting pliers to fix this issue.

Issues with plumbing vent boots

If you find that your plumbing vent boot has cracks or a broken seam it is best to replace the plumbing vent boot. If the nails are missing or pulled free then replace the screws with rubber-washer screws that are used for metal roofing systems.
